Preface Death Summons: It was in the middle of the night when the phone shattered the silence like a priceless vase falling from a high mantle. A call that makes you go from the anger of, “Who the hell is calling?” to a deep beat of your heart so hard it enters your stomach squeezing the air out of your lungs; questions running into answers, running into questions, mixing with a bubbling of gut acid and salted tears as you fumble to get your bearings. A million thoughts rushing in and out so fast they become instincts and reflexes. Maybe there is a mistake, maybe this didn’t really happen, maybe she is still alive or it wasn’t her are the prayers and thoughts that seem to dominate your mind as you turn the corner and enter the hospital. When you begin to see the familiar faces of family members, you notice how they avoid your eyes as they slowly shake their heads. The nightmare begins to painfully become reality as you fight for it not to be true. Pieces of the story begin to put themselves together in one part of your mind, while thoughts of your last encounter with her begin to replay in another part. Guilt, anger with self, sorrow and then a rage begins to brew up toward the people responsible for taking her from you; you begin seeking out the eyes in the family who burn with hatred like yours. The laws of the streets mandate revenge, that you are ordained by the power invested in the spilled blood of your loved one to execute the perpetrators. The thirst for vengeance creeps though your body, entering your mind, then your soul. Satan himself visits your subconscious to justify your cause by reading scriptures from the Bible: “an eye for an eye…” You’re jolted awake from sweaty dreams, of grinding teeth and clinching fists. Slowly the feeling consumes every aspect of your life as it suffocates all life’s pleasures. It isn’t long before anyone’s blood will seemingly soothe your family’s pain. Satan’s lies set in and the Klan’s low giggle begins to grow as your plot of retaliation becomes a reality. While we get caught up in the killing frenzy of our own, the Klan’s laughter turns into a roar we cannot seem to hear; laughter that is drowned out by the gun blasts and cries of our communities. Our plot to kill each other is but a smaller plot within a larger one that desires the outcome of mistrust, self-hatred and self-genocide. We continue to be conducted by the very same evil spirits that immobilize our potential for returned greatness. The family unit and young males are the targets and the destruction of our future the prize. The Search: What will it take? What will it take to realize the crime of self-genocide that we commit on ourselves? How will we deal with the terror and shame of the crimes against ourselves and our families? What will it take to recognize and deal with the slick mind games of the Klan and their likes? How will we deal with the fiery rage of reality when we see the faces of our loved ones lost too soon through our own ignorance and gullibility? What will it take? The answer lies in prayer, courage, determination, grace and all those things that we already possess. We must realize the traits that we developed so many generations ago in the greatness of the African civilization; traits that allowed us to endure, survive and to rise up from the degradation of slavery. We can take such impassioned resilience and use it to forge our inherent traits into a sword; a sword of reformation. This sword will cut deep into our minds, deep into the ignorance that oppresses us, allowing wisdom and love to flow back into our community. We can watch as our children grow and flourish under the shade of that sword. In the shade of that sword lies safety.
